Hi hi!

It feels like it’s been a while. Summer is rolling right along, and somehow we’re already heading into August. It’s been one of those wonderfully full months made up of lots of little things: lake swims, picnics, the World Cup final (paired with Argentinian enchiladas), side-by-side birthday pedicures, and evenings reading on the patio. Nothing too wild, just a smooth rhythm of quality moments.

I’ve been taking advantage of the local markets and abundance of fresh produce we have in our area. Our kitchen has been brimming with cherries, tomatoes, peaches, herbs, and rhubarb—which feels like a small summer victory. I’ve also been collecting a few things worth sharing and keeping busy with some creative projects. As usual, you'll find books, art, music, recipes, and a handful of great finds in this month's edition.

But before we dive in...

Movie nights have been good lately!

• We went to see The Odyssey last weekend—have you seen it? How good is the score by Ludwig Göransson? But really, how good is everything? If I had co-workers, they’d hate how often I’m humming the creepy little flute theme at my desk. Honestly, I think I need to see it once more before it leaves the theatre.

• Our weekly episode of Silo Season 3 has become my favourite Friday night treat. We often make homemade pizzas or something fun for the viewing and then sit and hypothesize the plot afterwards.

• I took myself on a solo date to see The Invite. It was uncomfortable and cringe, but also made me laugh out loud several times before crying on the drive home. Probably not one I’d rewatch, but definitely thought it was well done.

Eating in Season

• Made myself another rhubarb almond flour birthday cake this year and served it with hazelnut gelato. I could eat this every day.

• Trying this carrot ribbon salad on the weekend…

• I’ve been really into cold soba noodle salads this summer—with edamame, fresh cucumbers, and a sesame ponzu chili dressing.

• Would love someone to make me this Summer Tomato and Pecorino Crostata. Maybe I’ll try my hand at it in August.

• Loving lots of simple salads. I use this olive oil with a bit of champagne vinegar, salt, pepper, and grated parm.

Recent Reads

• Famesick by Lena Dunham (2026). Like many, I was a big fan of Girls, so this memoir was a no-brainer. I listened to the audiobook version, which felt even more special—listening to Lena herself tell the story. I’d forgotten just how refreshingly unfiltered she is—sharp, funny, self-deprecating, and brilliant. Loved it.

• The Wilderness by Ayşegül Savaş (2024). With several close friends in the newborn stage of life (and after my own experiences with miscarriage), I was drawn to this novella about the first forty days of motherhood. While I admired its exploration of postpartum mythology and tradition, I was hoping for something a little more intimate and grounded.

• The Testaments by Margaret Atwood (2020). Oh boy, was I ever excited to return to Giliad again. If you’ve read this series, that might sound alarming, but there’s something about the world Atwood created that has me endlessly fascinated. Set fifteen years after The Handmaid’s Tale, The Testaments follows the voices of Aunt Lydia and two young women whose lives become deeply intertwined. Absolutely loved.

Post Holiday

• Since returning from Scandinavia, we’ve been craving a little slice of the Nordics. It was time to finally book in at the Nordic Spa by our place and our only regret was not doing it sooner! Their prices are very affordable—I have a feeling we’ll be buying punch cards once autumn arrives.

• And on that note, I was delighted to find a source for proper Swedish cardamom buns at the Moss Street Market! If you’re in town on Saturdays, don’t miss out on these.

At this point in the trip, we’d grounded, we’d grown, and we were feeling pretty groovy. Copenhagen was intentionally planned as the last stop on our holiday because we knew we would be craving some good old-fashioned fun by the time we arrived. We were correct.

If you’ve been following along these past few weeks, thank you so much. If you’re new here, the story begins with Act I (Stockholm) and continues with Act II (Oslo)—a Shakespearean arc through the three countries of Scandinavia.

The best way I can describe Copenhagen is simply a big playground for adults. That is, adults who love art, design, food, fashion, architecture, cheerful colours, riding bikes, climbing towers, and ferris wheels. I’ve wanted to visit Copenhagen for so long and, truly, it exceeded every expectation. The smiles were ear-to-ear, the jaws were dropping low, and for one glorious week, our only responsibility was deciding what kind of fun to have next.

Hej Design Week!

As if this city wasn’t cool enough, we happened to arrive just as Copenhagen’s Design Week was underway—an annual festival where showrooms, studios, and brands throw open their doors to celebrate all things design. Not planned, just a wonderful blessing from the furniture gods above. This meant I got to visit the flagship stores of some of my favourite brands, while also wandering through free exhibitions and gaining access to some of the coolest event spaces around the city.

Basically Christmas morning for design lovers.

Walking into Helle Mardahl’s studio felt like stepping inside the world’s most beautiful candy shop filled from floor to ceiling with goodies. As they say…if I ever won the lottery, there would be signs.

Tekla was a total dream. I went to both their showroom and their design exhibition—which was all about quilting. You may remember I finished my very first quilt just a couple months ago, so this felt kismet. Organic textiles, historic rooms, a live string quartet, and free gifts. Tekla had it all. I left with a quilted pouch filled with lavender, a cucumber water, and a small portion of my husband’s suitcase now dedicated to bringing home a box of face cloths...bless that man.

Hay House was a must—obviously. I picked up a few treasures, although I briefly considered filling an entire shipping container instead. The exhibition itself was lovely, but honestly, the people watching was even better. We’re talking fashion-week-level street style where everyone looked like they’d just stepped out of a Scandinavian design campaign. I felt wildly underdressed, but so grateful to be a part of the action.

All this and I hadn’t even been to the galleries or museums yet…

Where the Art Lives

Buckle up, baby. I’m going to try my best to reign it in with this section, but let’s just say there was A LOT to see. And yes, all of it was worth writing home about.

A short train ride along the Danish coastline took us north to the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art for a lovely day trip. The museum effortlessly blurs the line between architecture, landscape, and art. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame the forest and sea, sculptures spill out onto the lawns, and every turn reveals another corner to stop and simply take it all in.

It never felt like we were walking from one gallery room to the next—it felt like the property was one beautifully choreographed experience.

One of our favourite installations was Yayoi Kusama's Gleaming Lights of the Souls. From the outside, it looks like nothing more than a white box. Step inside though, and you're instantly transported to another dimension. The tiny mirrored room stretches into infinity, surrounding you with endless reflections of coloured lights—equal parts playful and mysterious.

As always, I found myself drawn to works depicting the female form. Lucian Freud’s Girl in Bed felt really intimate, while Henri Laurens’ towering bronze figure stood with confidence. Two completely different women, yet both impossible to walk past without stopping to admire.

Even though we’ve barely scratched the surface of this incredible museum…I’ll just leave a few more of my favourites before we move on. Including a sewing machine print that would looks so cool in my office, a snowman in the middle of the forest, and a cheeky reminder of what galleries looked like in 2022.

I saved our visit to the Ny Carlsberg Glyptoteket for an afternoon when we had lots of time to leisurely wander. I knew it was going to be a good one, and oh was it ever.

If Louisiana was all fresh sea air and contemporary creativity, the Glyptoteket was its regal and contemplative opposite. Originally designed as a daylight museum, it was filled with marble sculptures, towering palms, and soft natural light—easily one of the most beautiful atriums I’ve ever seen.

Housing thousands of years of history, we saw everything from real mummified bodies in the basement to masterpieces by Monet, Van Gogh, Cèzanne, and Renoir. It managed to feel both enormous and perfectly peaceful at the same time. If I lived here, I would buy an annual pass and visit often—enjoying lunch at the café with friends, or sitting and writing. I really did not want to leave.

Edgar Degas’ Little Dancer Aged Fourteen was a particularly special moment for me. I’ve probably watched this video about recreating her tiny ballet skirt ten times, and it never gets old. Standing in front of the original sculpture was emotional for sure.

Outside, Rodin’s The Thinker sat unobtrusively amongst the elements—a little gift for anyone passing by to admire, no museum ticket required. It perfectly captured what I loved most about Copenhagen: taking time for beauty is time well spent.

Selected Read + Fave Bookstore:

Waist Deep by Linea Maja Ernst (2026). Translated from Danish by Nicolette Sherilyn Hellberg.

Another country, another translated novel. This one was the perfect companion for Copenhagen as the days inched closer to midsummer. Set over one idyllic week, a group of university friends reunite at a lakeside cabin—sharing meals, taking long swims, and sunbathing into the long Danish evenings. It made me want to stretch out our holiday and find a little cottage by the water.

What they didn’t plan for was navigating old crushes, changing identities, and the strange realization that adulthood rarely looks the way we imagined it would. Ernst’s writing reminded me of Sally Rooney in the way she allows conversations and relationships to unfold with honesty and awkwardness. There is something quirky and deeply human about both their characters that makes them feel genuine and flawed.

Shoutout to my favourite bookstore in Copenhagen: SUPeR Books, where I found this and other gems.

A Few Foodie Favourites

The food in Copenhagen was… unmatched. I made us a few reservations weeks in advance for the places we didn’t want to miss, and we had no problem finding several more gems along the way. Gosh I miss eating here.

Mad & Kaffe: Starting with birthday brunch, we had to visit this café for the ultimate pick-and-mix breakfast. Honestly, café culture in Copenhagen was on another level. We had 12 small dishes between the two of us, a nice balance of sweet and savoury, and everything was incredible. They even put celebratory Danish flags on the table for Scott’s birthday. 🇩🇰

Andersen & Maillard: I love a natural yogurt with house-made granola, paired with a simple egg and sourdough bread. Maybe some fruit or a croissant—but no towering stacks of waffles drowning in syrup or massive plates of potatoes covered in mystery sauces. Just simple and classy.

Danish breakfasts really made me feel seen.

Hart Bageri: Our Airbnb was right around the corner from one of their locations, so we quickly became frequent flyers. Daily matcha lattes, rustic sourdough loaves, the cutest branding, and darn good pastries.

Høst: The greatest dining experience we’ve ever had. As I mentioned earlier, we don’t eat out a lot at home. So for Scott’s 40th birthday dinner, we went large. A seven course meal with wine pairings, caviar, and all sorts of culinary surprises. The best part about it was how relaxed and welcoming the place was. Up for a Michelin star, but down to earth and approachable. Would absolutely return and highly recommend to anyone visiting the city.

Bæst: I love pizza. Specifically, I love Napoleon-style pizza—and as someone who has travelled all over Italy, I am nervous to say this might have been the best pizza I’ve ever eaten. Sigh…

The World’s Most Liveable City

Copenhagen has repeatedly been crowned with the title of world’s most liveable city. After a week of biking, walking, and riding the metro, I think I have a better understanding as to why that is. The city seems to be designed around a simple question: How can we make life both practical and enjoyable?

We’d originally booked an architectural bike tour to learn more about this, but when it was cancelled last minute, I refused to let months of planning go to waste. So I copied all the stops from the tour into Google Maps, searched up fun facts along the way, and took us on a self-guided adventure.

The Black Diamond Library was our first reminder that public buildings don't have to be beige to be functional. Its glossy black granite exterior reflects the harbour like a mirror and transforms with the light throughout the day. Inside was just as gorgeous and full of students studying, people meeting for coffee, and small exhibitions. Easily one of my favourite stops, it felt less like a stuffy library and more like the city's living room.

A little further along we came to the student dormitory known as Tietgenkollegiet. Apparently architects travel far and wide to see this building, and standing beneath it, we understood why. The enormous circular structure reminded us of the Roman Colosseum—supporting community living while preserving individual privacy. Just brilliant.

No matter how many postcards or images you’ve seen of Nyhavn, nothing captures the enchanting charm of walking down this canal in person. Lined with 17th-century townhouses and bustling cafés, I had to go back several times throughout the week just for another little glimpse.

Scott was determined to find the most epic view of the city—so up the tallest church spire we went! The Church of Our Saviour let us climb all the way to the rickety top and overlook the gorgeous neighbourhood of Christianshavn below. I have to admit, it was pretty cool.

More than anything, the cycling infrastructure really impressed us. The Bicycle Snake (Cykelslangen) wasn't just a clever bridge to solve traffic issues—it was pure joy. Painted orange like a clay tennis court, we went pedalling down this yellow brick road with big grins and great views of the Kactus Towers—yes, apartments that look like giant succulents.

Just another example of how this city felt like a big playground for adults.

Tivoli Gardens had us giggling on swings, snuggling on park benches, and listening to a woman play the piano as the sky turned pink. What better way to end our grand city tour than the amusement park from 1843 that inspired Walt Disney to make Disneyland.

At the end of the day, there wasn't one building that impressed us most—it was the philosophy behind all of them that captured us. Copenhagen seems to believe that life should be practical, but not at the expense of beauty and enjoyment. From libraries and bridges to amusement parks and churches, practicality and playfulness happily coexisted.

Worth the Suitcase Space

Feeling all girly and flirty, this little duo made my daily look feel extra special: balm blush (in Beverly Hills) + sheer eyeshadow (in Glacé).

Compression packing cubes were truly the only way we made it home without buying extra luggage. So grateful to my lovely mother-in-law for gifting me these before the trip!

This peppermint roller is my secret weapon for summer. A quick dab on my temples and the back of my neck keeps me from overheating in warm weather or overcrowded areas.

Biggest shopping regret? Walking away from these Salomons in a consignment store, only to return an hour later and find they’d been sold. Had to treat myself to a new pair of Billi Bi sandals to recover… it worked.

Very tempted by this beautiful and fun dress.

And finally… yes, I packed a couple HAY crates home. Coulda, woulda, shoulda brought more.

Curtain Fall

As we started to pack our bags for the last time, I can’t believe I didn’t cry. The past two times I'd been to Europe, there had been plenty of tears when it came time to leave. But this trip felt full. Wholeheartedly complete. Of course I would have loved to stay longer, but I was excited to get back and put my inspiration to use. To bring more colour and joy into our furnishings at home, to be more confident and bold with my wardrobe, and to remember to have more fun!

Denmark made good design feel like a public service. As though quality craftsmanship and intentional colour schemes belonged to everyone. It left me wishing we demanded a little more than grey and “good enough” back home. The price of admission to this city wasn’t cheap, but boy-oh-boy was it worth it.

As every good performance eventually must, ours was finally drawing to a close. By the end of the week we'd seen furniture that looked like sculpture, eaten some of the best meals we can remember, and laughed like children as we biked across bridges with our hands in the air. Creativity ran through every street, café, and outfit we walked past. Even my most curated Pinterest boards have nothing on a single day spent wandering Copenhagen. This city filled our cups so full it had to send us home with takeout boxes for all the leftovers.

A standing ovation was well deserved as the red velvet curtain touched the stage one final time. I know in my heart there will be an encore to this holiday, and I will visit Scandinavia again. And if I’m really lucky in this lifetime, again after that.

It was a five hour trip from Stockholm to Oslo, passing lakes, valleys, and small villages. After a week away from work and responsibilities, we were starting to feel cool as cucumbers. The train was such a lovely transition between countries and onto the next stage of this trip. I really did plan this holiday in a three-part Shakespearean arc. Scott received little notes each morning that included a themed title for the day, some fun facts, and a general plan—making sure to leave lots of space for spontaneous wandering.

The Oslo Opera House greeted us like an Olympic god as we stepped off the train and onto the waterfront. Built in 2007 to resemble an iceberg—which apparently looks even more striking beneath winter snow—it was such a contrast to Stockholm. Oslo was slick, modern, and a lot more edgy. The energy felt more masculine and almost a bit sultry with its brooding weather. Just as planned, this city had a whole different role to play.

After a week of slowing down, and with Scott’s final days in his thirties wrapping up, we found ourselves talking about which habits were worth carrying forward and which ways of living had stopped serving us. Milestone birthdays have a way of making you take inventory—not just of the years behind you, but of the person you're actively becoming.

Open Air Living

Something we were curious about during our time in Oslo was what the Norwegians call: “friluftsliv”. It roughly translates to "open-air living," but it's more of a philosophy than a dictionary definition. It's the idea that time spent outdoors isn't a luxury reserved for weekends or holidays—but an essential part of life.

This was apparent almost immediately. If Stockholm’s social life revolved around cafés, Oslo’s seemed to revolve around green spaces. We were so impressed by the city’s parks and gardens. Places like Vigeland Sculpture Park and the Botanical Garden are free to the public, making it easier for people to spend time in nature. I would have happily paid admission to enter both of these places. They were beautifully maintained and safe spaces to come alone or with a group. It made me happy to see so many people with baby strollers or walking and chatting with friends—witnessing the natural unhurried flow of their days.

We did a lot of wandering and exploring here, through leafy streets and peaceful cemeteries. Even when the rain came out of nowhere and we felt unsure at first, a lady in a local shop said to us: “enjoy the rain!”. We both looked at each other and said, I don’t know if anybody has ever said that without being sarcastic before. People are constantly complaining about the weather at home. One of those moments when it feels like the universe is winking at you.

Selected Read + Fave Bookstore:

Repetition by Vigdis Hjorth (2026). Translated from Norwegian by Charlotte Barslund.

You know the drill, a Norwegian-written novel was necessary for Act Two. This was my second read by Hjorth, and I already have plans for more. The novel follows a writer looking back on the year she turned sixteen—a year marked by first romances, teenage rebellion, anxious parents, and a series of events that only begin to make sense decades later.

Oslo felt like the perfect place to sit with Hjorth’s style of writing—intelligent, honest, and deeply interested in human behaviour. Repetition explores memory, family dynamics, and the uncomfortable gap between what we experience in the moment and what we come to understand years later. The kind of novel that trusts the reader to wrestle with difficult questions rather than providing neat conclusions upfront. It was dark and brilliant, I highly recommend.

Shoutout to my favourite bookstore in Oslo: Prismatic Pages, where I found this and other gems.

Art Exhibitions

My personal measure of whether an art gallery is special: I audibly gasp or quietly tear up. Well, the Munch Museum did both—on multiple floors.

I’m going to be honest, I wasn’t all that excited for this gallery. I knew The Scream and, without doing much research beforehand, assumed much of Edvard Munch’s work would be similarly dark and emotionally tangled. Thankfully, this fourteen-floor temple of art still ended up on our itinerary, and it was one of the best surprises of the trip.

Starting on the first floor where guest exhibits are held, we were so lucky to visit while Paula Rego: Dance Among Thorns was on. I loved seeing her work alongside Munch’s and noticing the visual conversation between them. I just recently learned about The Dance, so walking into this room—and discovering its connection to Munch— was really meaningful for me.

In addition to her paintings, there were a few textile art pieces included in the show that really impressed me. I didn’t want to leave the enormous 21 foot tapestry constructed of wool, silk, cotton, and various other fabrics. It told the story of a 1578 battle in Morocco, and every little section held such beauty. I had my face up so close to the fabric, wildly impressed and inspired by her textile placements and dreaming of attempting something like this one day.

And on the remaining 13 floors… Edvard Munch (1863 - 1944). Born in Norway, this man created and left in his will over 26,000 works to the city of Oslo—making this museum the extraordinary experience that it is today.

The more time I spent with his work, the more I realized how unfairly I’d reduced him to The Scream. His paintings are vibrant and emotionally honest. Love appears in equal parts tenderness and pain. Joy and grief often exist in the same frame. Munch seemed to paint what people were feeling more than what they may have actually looked like. The two works above were among my favourites.

Waiting my turn to stand beside The Scream, I understood it differently. As someone who knows anxiety all too well, I no longer saw it as an exaggeration, but as an honest portrait of a feeling that's difficult to explain. Seeing it within the context of Munch's life's work made it feel less like the famous painting we’ve all seen in books and more like a part of the bigger story.

I hope this little glimpse into the world of Munch encourages at least one person to see him as so much more than the artist behind The Scream.

And last but not least, nothing prepared me for The Sun. This monumental painting filled my entire field of vision—radiating from across the room a presence that simply cannot be captured by my iPhone 12.

Felt this one in my heart

The Floating Sauna

When in Norway, do as the Norwegians do. We knew a sauna and cold plunge needed to make the itinerary, but we didn’t realize just how awesome it would be. While Finland may be the country most associated with sauna culture, Norway has its own centuries-old tradition of alternating between sauna and cold water—a ritual now known as contrast therapy. Oslo's floating saunas have become one of the city's most iconic ways to experience it.

Floating in the inner harbour with front-row views of Oslo's Opera House, Munch Museum, and striking waterfront architecture, we chatted with both fellow travellers and local regulars before climbing onto the roof of our wood-fired sauna and jumping into the fjord below.

We booked in with KOK Sauna and had a really good experience. In fact, since coming home we’ve attempted to recreate the circuit by overheating in our car (blasting the heat when it’s already 27°C outside), and then promptly jumping into the lake.

Scott calls this the poor man’s plunge! It does the trick.

A Few Foodie Favourites

We rarely eat out at home, so each time we tried a new restaurant on this trip felt really special. There was so much to try and enjoy in Oslo. Here are a few quick highlights:

• Tim Wendelboe Coffee Roasters was pretty elite. The espresso was too sophisticated for me (I’m mostly a matcha girl), but Scott had what can only be described as a near spiritual experience. I guess that’s why they’re rated as the #2 coffee shop in the world.

• We ducked into Koie Ramen to escape a downpour and ended up having the perfect cosy dinner we were craving.

• I made us a reso at Alex Sushi weeks prior. We sat around the sushi bar and ordered all sorts of little à la carte delights. The flavour combos were unmatched and it was easily some of the best quality sushi we’ve ever had.

• Joe & The Juice was everywhere, so I had to try the hype. We ended up getting freshly pressed juices and smoothies here and again in Denmark. A nice balance to our twice daily pastry routine.

Worth the Suitcase Space

• So, the sun rose at 3:50AM each day. Thankfully this silk eye mask worked like a charm!

• Left on Friday makes the only bikini I actually feel comfortable and confident in. Their top shelf for large busts, and hi hi bottoms hold all the curves in just the right places. I wear the colour ‘punch’.

• My makeup was super minimal: brow gel, highlighter, and lip gloss.

• These little magnetic capsules were great for vitamins, jewelry, and small bits that disappear in toiletry bags.

• The halfway mark of the trip called for a load of laundry. These detergent sheets pack flat, weigh nothing, and made things simple.

• We started getting really into nightly sheet masks. The vacation versions of us were super chill and cool, I would like to channel these people more.

Curtain Fall

Time sure is good to you when you’re on holiday. Oslo was the shortest stay of our Scandinavian trio, only being four days, but it sure felt longer. By the time we packed our bags for Copenhagen, we could not believe we still had an entire week ahead of us.

Oslo reminded us of the little moments that slowly collect over time and lead to a great life. Like embracing the weather instead of waiting for it to improve, not judging the book (or art) by its cover, and jumping into the water even though it messes up your hair. The city seemed to make those choices become easy, weaving fresh air, art, movement, and community into the regular routine.

As the curtain fell on Act Two, we left with more than the really good vintage blazer I scored. We had fresh perspectives and the feeling that transformations were slowly taking shape.

We departed the plane and made our way to Stockholm—a city made up of 14 islands. As someone who grew up on an island, there is something very comforting in knowing water is always just around the corner. Before we even put our bags down, there was a sense of softness, an exhale. This was the right place to be. My husband selected Sweden for the first stop on his birthday trip, a country we’ve long admired for its intellectual culture, intentional way of living, and high levels of happiness.

We had a lot to learn and absorb in the coming weeks. We were ready.

The sun rose at 4:15am each day in Sodermälm—the neighbourhood we chose to stay in for the week. Our Airbnb was in a five story walk up with high ceilings and a stunning view. A Swedish couple’s real home. The wood floors creaked, we could hear children playing in the park, and cutlery clinked on plates at the cafés below. As we unpacked our clothes into the wooden armoire, our shoulders relaxed at the realization that our trip had finally begun.

Beauty, Beauty Everywhere

With the stage now set, our first performance was a grand one. I love theatres, so I had to find an excuse to sit in a red velvet seat at the Royal Swedish Opera House. Completed in 1898 in a neo-classical style, we were overwhelmed with the detail and beauty this room displayed. We sat back in wonder as the Royal Swedish Ballet performed Gustavia.

In addition to the dancing, a live orchestra played through the entire 2.5 hour show and added so much to the experience. Little did we know, our tickets also granted us access to Stockholm’s finest people watching. Women in embroidered Toteme sets, beautiful handbags, and so many good blazers. It was an evening we won’t soon forget.

After the show, we stepped back out into the warm evening. Right on cue for the next show to begin… the setting sun.

Selected Read + Fave Bookstore:

Fair Play by Tove Jansson (1989). Translated from Swedish by Thomas Teal.

Of course I wanted to read a novel translated from Swedish during the first act of our trip. I selected this beautiful novella by the creator of Moomin—literary fiction but said to reflect her personal life—which is told through a series of interconnected episodes. It follows two aging artists who have spent decades building a life together. Their separate apartments share a large open attic space that they’ve turned into a creative studio. Each day they work side-by-side, sharing a life while also keeping their own. Though it isn’t romantic in the Hollywood sense, this thoughtful and understated story is a look at companionship, creative work, and the freedom to remain independent within a long-term relationship. In a city that values community, meaningful work, and the simple rhythms of everyday life, this was a lovely pairing for Stockholm.

Art Exhibitions:

Filled with incredible work, the Moderna Museet was an afternoon well spent. I loved the textile art collection of Anna Casparsson. Folding screens, piano covers, pillows, and tablecloths, she created decorative pieces to display in the home with whimsical scenes and folk tale elements. It was The Isle of Bliss (shown above) that captured my heart though. The little castle reminded me of the Pink Palace in Honolulu, a place very near and dear to me.

Stumbling across Lee Miller’s famous photograph in Hitler’s bathtub and seeing a life-sized work by Salvador Dalí were two epic surprises. And while I had hoped to see Louise Bourgeois’ piece, it wasn’t on display during our visit.

We also spent an evening at the Fotografiska. One of Sweden’s leading contemporary photographers, Lotta Antonsson, had a beautiful and slightly unsettling installation. Fluid female forms were adorned with shells and amethysts to both disrupt and embellish the viewer’s experience of beauty. I was drawn to her black-and-white film and loved her use of objects.

Also a treat was the collection from Martin Parr. Featuring over 400 vibrant images from his 50-year-long career. Sharp, witty, and tender, they were a celebration of human life in the strange little moments that make us wonderfully unique.

We were very fortunate to visit a few galleries and museums in the city, but the truth is, beauty was prioritized everywhere. Concrete traffic barriers were carved into lionesses, and even subway stations six stories underground were transformed into works of art—apparently earning it the title of the world's longest art exhibit.

Day Trip: Saltsjöbaden

It’s been referred to as the “Swedish Hamptons” and it, with its clay tennis courts and grand seaside hotels, could easily become the setting for a Wes Anderson film. This small coastal town was surprisingly quiet and understated—quickly becoming one of our favourite memories from the trip.

Our decision to spend the day in Saltsjöbaden centred around the Vår Gård Hotel. With day passes to their sauna, private dock, and relaxation rooms, we spent a good portion of the afternoon unwinding in this idyllic setting before a great meal at their farm-to-table restaurant.

Later, as we walked through the neighbourhood, we got an up-close look at some of the area’s stunning homes—many of them reminiscent of the house in Sentimental Value. We couldn’t help but imagine ourselves out in the yard, having the neighbours over for wine, and walking to the sea for a daily dip. The peaceful energy had us browsing local real estate listings, you know—just in case that lottery win comes through.

A Few Foodie Favourites

Stockholm's food scene was great. Unfussy and simple—focusing on good ingredients, beautiful settings, and connection. One of our biggest takeaways came from witnessing how effortlessly social everyone seemed to be. Without pressure or perfection, time spent together was second nature. Never a question of when, just simply where. Here’s a few spots we really enjoyed:

• Folii Wine Bar: bread and whipped butter, anchovies with lemon, and great wine. We went late evening and stayed till closing—it was one of my favourite nights.

• Meatballs for the People: a classic home cooked Swedish meal. Nothing fancy, just simple comfort food. With 13 different meat options, Scott was happy trying the reindeer.

• Café Pascal: the best cardamom buns (aka kardemummabullar) and my favourite breakfast. We quickly became regulars.

• Rosendals Garden: most ideal setting for a picnic in the park. Our afternoon here was the best. We both took naps under a tree while dozens of other families did the same.

• Every single grocery store, Lakrids, and Caramella: for my daily candy fix! Sweden is the candy capitol of the world for good reason and I did not miss out on the opportunity.

Worth the Suitcase Space

Honestly, I’m so glad we only took carry-on luggage. It took serious skill to prioritize, but it made hopping between cities infinitely easier. The following eight items earned their place in my case:

1. Kyoto Carpenter Pants were stylish enough for museums and dinner, yet comfortable enough for long travel days.

2. Lightweight and chic, this Scandinavian blue oversized oxford shirt was equally versatile.

3. With zero space to pack a blow dryer, Dae Styling Cream was my entire hair routine.

4. My skin gets dry with travel but this serum concealer passed the test and kept a fresh minimal look.

5. Small victories go a long way when you’re halfway across the world. I didn’t have to charge my toothbrush once during the trip.

6. My favourite electrolyte packets for days with long flights or 20k+ steps!

7. Polarized sunglasses were essential since Scandinavian daylight is endless in the summer (love these affordable ones).

8. I always pack a cosy washcloth incase the Airbnbs don’t supply.

Curtain Fall

Stockholm was alive without being loud. Buzzing but not chaotic. What felt extraordinary to us appeared to be more routine for them. A building as beautiful as the Opera House wasn’t reserved for an annual visit, it was written on the calendar for a Tuesday night.

Beauty and enjoyment were never destinations we had to work towards or earn, they were part of the infrastructure and offered in abundance.

People truly looked happier. Women especially seemed more relaxed and satisfied, it was beautiful and inspiring to witness.

As the curtain began to fall on Act One, we felt the rare feeling of being present. Aside from sending a few photos to our families, we were mostly offline and immersed in our new surroundings. Somewhere between the café culture and late evening sunsets, we felt ourselves settling back into our bodies.

Time slowed down—our week in Sweden easily felt like two.

May was abundant with good company and connection. I spent my weekends travelling over to Salt Spring Island1 and Vancouver for some long overdue face-to-face time with friends. We met new babies, celebrated a few birthdays, and scheduled all the coffee catch-ups. Maybe it was the excitement of an upcoming trip, maybe it was the gorgeous summery weather we had—either way, I’m grateful for these sweet moments.

As I send this, we’ll be waiting to board our flight to Stockholm. My husband and I are taking our first real holiday together to celebrate his 40th birthday—something we’ve long saved and planned for. I’m excited to explore three new countries together (Sweden, Norway, & Denmark), eat our weight in pastries, and absorb as much beauty and inspiration as humanly possible. More than anything, I’m excited to release some heaviness from the last year and return to a more vibrant, creative version of myself. Something tells me Scandinavia has a little magic up its sleeve for us.

Alright, here’s how the month went. Starting with Suki’s new song that brilliantly sums up my current vibes.

A friend of mine hosted a sourdough retreat at Sea Cider Farm, so a couple of us decided to get tickets and try our hands at baking. It was so much fun—a beautiful setting, highly informative, and we were all treated to a delicious lunch.

We each left with our very own starter and the fermenting dough that we made in class. I baked mine in a Dutch oven and it turned out surprisingly well. Golden and airy with the perfect crispy crust.

I also hand-dyed one of my jean jackets this month. It was originally a pale beige colour that completely washed out my complexion (I’m a cool summer after all). The fit and shape of this piece are great, but I never reach for it because of the colour. It was time to fix it or ditch it. So I bought garment dye, cooked it on the stovetop like the instructions said, and crossed my fingers for something better than…warm biscuit.

I blended an indigo denim with pearl grey, creating this gorgeous Japanese workwear-inspired blue. The colour came out soft, mineral-rich, and complex. Even better, the threads didn’t take the dye, so the finished result looks like a custom piece. I’m quite proud!

In other garment news…

We’re only bringing carry-on luggage for our trip2, so I needed to be strategic while packing my clothes. Practical and comfortable were my non-negotiables, but I also wanted a little style for walking around Scandinavia.

Honestly, this was a very difficult task. Scientific almost. Keeping the weather and activities on our itinerary in mind, balancing layers and colours that could work together in endless combinations, and using as much from my current closet as possible… it was no joke.

I kept things very minimal—knowing I’ll find pops of colour, fun patterns, and unique textures while we’re travelling—leaving extra room in my wardrobe (and suitcase) for some shopping! With the addition of a light raincoat and a few soft layers, this is everything I packed to wear abroad…

My Ayla Baggy Jeans and Kyoto Carpenter Pants were no-brainers. Light, relaxed, and easy to pair with my favourite cotton tees.

A white poplin Midi Skirt felt necessary for Copenhagen coffee dates and afternoons at the art gallery. Same with this cashmere tee and oversized Oxford Shirt in a classic scandi-blue.

The black Lodge Pants and Cavalier Sleeveless Crop are cut from the same fabric and make a striking little set—comfortable (elastic waist) with just enough structure to look polished. *I also picked up the Lilac colour in this top because it’s so versatile.

Shoes were easy: Samba Sneakers for walking, Jelly Flip Flops for the sauna and warmer days, and Hatti Slingbacks for something a little fancy. All pulled together with my favourite polarized Sunglasses, simple silver jewelry, and opal Phone Necklace.

Recent Reads:

• Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov (1955). This is a complicated book to write about… and I debated whether to leave it out. Considered a literary classic, the unreliable narrator of this novel feeds us horrific subject matter wrapped in beautiful prose, leaving me somewhat overwhelmed by the experience. It’s dark, intelligent, obsessive, and manipulative. I approached it more as a study in narration than a ‘good read’—and I feel odd saying, but I enjoyed it.

• Blue Sisters by Coco Mellors (2024). Even though this novel dealt with heavy subject matter—addiction, grief, death, and the general messiness of being human—it never felt overly bleak. We follow four sisters whose relationships feel layered, flawed, and deeply genuine. I became attached to each of them and felt like I got to spend time alongside their lives each time I opened the pages. A great lit-fic read for those who love family dynamics. I really enjoyed it.

• Ways of Seeing by John Berger (1972). This felt like required reading before a trip filled with art galleries and visual inspiration. It’s a unique collection of essays exploring how art, advertising, wealth, and identity shape the way we look at images. Not art history exactly, but thought-provoking for those of us interested in aesthetics, personal style, branding, and visual culture. Truth be told, I thought I would like it more. It left me curious to dive deeper into the language of images.

On The Screen Lately:

• All the art references from the Met Gala this year—so good!

• MadFit on YouTube has really approachable movement videos. I’ve been loving her Dua Lipa dance workout.

• And speaking of Dua: This author chat with Claire Keegan is lovely.

• We went to see The Devil Wears Prada 2 for date night. Loved it, thought they did a great job commenting on the industry 20 years later. Would now like a spin-off mini series just about Emily.

• Beef Season 2 was highly addictive and completely unhinged. I binged it over a weekend and thoroughly enjoyed.

• Remarkably Bright Creatures made me cry—in a good way.

Scratch that, Neumann will be taking up my whole suitcase. This furry angel is craving a trip to Scandinavia apparently, lol. Thankfully we’re leaving him in very good hands while we’re away. 🤍😽

These past few weeks have come together like a daisy-chain… sweet little moments plucked from a vast meadow and woven into something beautiful. We had a bonfire under the stars in the backyard, I finished my first quilting project, put together a vibey mood board, and spent lots of time with friends and family. Plus, you know, the sun actually came out!

Over the equinox weekend, I let go of a lot of things that were no longer inspiring me. Books that have been sitting on my TBR pile forever but I continue to neglect—gone. Clothes I never reach for—bye bye! Pantry items I bought long ago but never feel like cooking—see ya. I packed up a bag for the food bank, a few more for Value Village, and sold a surprising amount on Marketplace. With my spring cleaning cash, I was able to replace a few pieces in my closet, have a few items tailored, and upgrade some basics. Everything feels lighter—both in my space and my mind.

Here’s how the past few months went…starting with the song I have on repeat. Cannot wait for the rest of her album to drop in May!

• I hosted a baby shower for a dear friend, which finally gave me the motivation to finish my first quilt! Since baby quilts are significantly smaller than bed-sized ones, it was the perfect starting point for me. I started with four sheets of super-soft organic cottons—cut those up into 189 pieces—then sewed them back together into one cosy blanket. What a bizarre and wonderful thing to do. It might have been easier if I followed a pattern, but I decided to make my own. I hand drew my design on paper and had Scott draft up the design and measurements on AutoCAD at work. I have to say, I’m really proud of the outcome.

• We went to see Project Hail Mary in theatres for date night. I laughed, cried, and swooned over Ryan Gosling—it was wonderful. I’m also loving Margo’s Got Money Troubles (as someone who read the book). What have you been into watching lately?

Recent Reads:

• Long Live the Post Horn! by Vigdis Hjorth (2020, Translated from Norwegian). This was a cool one to read—and one I will likely return to. The story follows a Norwegian woman working in public relations who becomes unexpectedly involved in a campaign to save the postal service, slowly pulling her out of isolation and emotional detachment. “What do we do with our despair if our lives are too small to contain it? Deny our despair and ignore our beating hearts, remain at odds with ourselves and fight ourselves, or…teach our brains to illuminate our hearts and help us live with contradictions that can't be cancelled out and become open to the idea that being a mere mortal is enough, more than enough in most respects, and once we're alive, try to live with gratitude and passion rather than shame and paralysis.” I’ve already picked up a few other novels by this author—recommend.

• The Hours by Michael Cunningham (1998). This Pulitzer Prize–winning novel is closely tied to Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf. I had every intention of reading them both, but after several attempts, I had to DNF Mrs. Dalloway. I was, however, able to enjoy Cunningham’s rendition. The story follows three interconnected women across different timelines—a day in the life of Virginia Woolf writing her novel, a 1950s housewife as she reads Woolf’s novel, and a present-day woman planning a party in a way that closely echoes the main character in Woolf’s novel. It’s a subtle reflection on inner life, loneliness, and the tension between the lives we live and the ones we imagine for ourselves. It took a bit of context for me to fully appreciate, but I’m really glad I stuck with it.

• Yesteryear by Caro Claire Burke (2026). I’m only halfway through this one, but it’s been an easy, engaging read. The story follows a social media “tradwife” influencer whose perfectly curated life unravels when she suddenly wakes up in the 1800s—forced to confront the reality of the lifestyle she’s been romanticizing online. The reviews are hit or miss, and I’m trying not to pick up too many buzzy new releases, but I simply couldn’t resist this premise. I’ll report back once I’m done.

• Of course, with the change in seasons came a brand new mood board. Can you tell where we’re headed for our holiday in a few weeks!? This one feels especially fresh and vibey—I love the way these boards shift the atmosphere of my office. This time around I’m channeling art galleries, Scandiavian cafes, soft lighting, pilates, and fresh air.

• I’ve been making this ginger-lime chicken with shiitake mushrooms and cilantro rice on repeat. It’s warming, but still light enough for the season. I’ve also been making simple salads with local greens, mini cucumbers and snap peas—topped with blueberries, pumpkin seeds, and a quick champagne vinegar/evoo dressing. This simple pasta has also been great, and a classic avocado toast (with flaky salt, sesame seeds, and chili flakes) has found its way back into my routine.

• You may remember me mentioning the video game my husband has been working on—a dinosaur-themed time-travel cooperative mission. Well, we were invited to a birthday party for one of his co-founders, which turned out to be a private tour through Dino Lab. It was far more educational and impressive than I expected—I got to see one of the world's largest and most complete T. rex skeletons (and hold one of the bones!). A fun experience if you have kiddos and find yourself in the area (Victoria, Canada).

• Hurra! I hit the 100-day streak on Duolingo learning Swedish. 🇸🇪 Apparently it’s one of the easiest languages to learn for English speaking people. I personally find it much easier than my attempts at Italian.

was like sweet music to my ears. Considering we still had snow on the ground a few days ago, I don’t think there was any grass to cut, but I love the enthusiasm. February felt somewhat administrative—in a good way—it had me prepping and planting a few creative seeds for the year ahead. I applied to help with an art project that I feel really aligned with, finally ordered all the fabric to sew my first quilt(!), and started sketching out plans for some upcoming travel. Winter has felt especially long and dark this year, but I finally feel as though I might just make it through. Only one more month until spring—when all my neighbours can bring out their lawn mowers and all will be well again.

In other news, I tried a handful of new recipes, listened to some good music, and read a stack of books with pink and red on the cover. My Valentine-month reads were all over the map to be honest: romance, divorce, beauty, and murder. One became a new favourite (very happy about that), one had me researching each chapter just to keep up, and the other two couldn’t pass a three-star rating.

Alright, here’s how it all went…

• Yes, I went to see the film adaptation that’s inspired every literary critic to release an essay on why Emerald lost the plot on Brontë’s masterpiece. As someone who recently read the novel, I do admit it missed the mark on several important themes and character portrayals. But I’m not going to say I didn’t enjoy it. I left the theatre in tears (so did Scott), and I’ve been thinking about it ever since. Please don’t be mad.

• Happy All The Time by Laurie Colwin (1978). I once read that Laurie Colwin was a Sally Rooney figure from an earlier generation, so I was curious to pick this up. The cover caught my attention, and I thought a quirky, literary take on romance would fit perfectly with my February round-up. The novel follows two cousins navigating love and compatibility in 1970s New York. It was charming and witty, dialogue-driven, but overall a bit flat for me. I prefer Rooney much more.

• Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier (1938). From the famous opening line—“Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again”—right through to the final page, I happily lived in this world. The story is told through the voice of an unnamed young woman who marries the wealthy widower, Maxim de Winter, and moves to his grand estate. What begins as a romantic relocation unfolds into a tense psychological unraveling. Secrets surface, loyalties shift, and the lingering shadow of his first wife, Rebecca, hangs over every room. A very approachable classic that I’ll likely be adding to my favourites shelf—highly recommend!

• The Beauty of the Husband by Anne Carson (2002). This one is a fictional essay written in 29 tangos—because a tango (like a marriage) must be danced until the end. This may have been a little too ambitious for me—I struggled to follow some of its complex choreography. The book traces the arc of a marriage marked by infidelity and intellectual entanglement, unfolding through fragments of memory, philosophical reflection, and poetry. This would be a really great book to read with an english class—dissecting it together piece by piece and opening up diverse conversation. It was very impressive and I might have to revisit this again in the future when I have time to dive deeper.

• Anatomy Of An Alibi by Ashley Elston (2026). A gifted copy that I flew through over a weekend. Fast-paced and super twisty, it definitely kept me turning the pages. I enjoyed her previous novel, First Lie Wins, more though—this one entertained me in the moment, but I know it won’t linger. A little fiction junk food, if you will.

• I tried a few new recipes this month. I like to print them out and keep them in a little basket in the kitchen. I write notes in the margins, and sometimes send them home with people if they ask me for the recipe. They always end up a bit stained and dusted with flour, but it’s all part of the beauty. Anyway, here are a few recipes we’ve enjoyed lately:

  • Chili crisp cucumber soba noodle salad

  • Spicy instant pot carrot soup (via Aja)

  • Baked gnocchi salad bowls!

  • Red Thai chicken and squash tray bake

In the depths of winter, it felt like the small gesture we all needed to push through the cold, dark days. January has crept by at a glacial pace for me—days blending into one another, somehow both long and fleeting at the same time. And yet, I don’t have a lot to report this month. I haven’t hit the ground running by any means—it’s felt more like a wrapping up of last year and an awkward, unplanned pause. I’m still holding out hope that the Lunar New Year in February will bring the momentum and renewal I’m craving.

This edit is a little shorter, but it gathers a few things that have been sustaining me lately: beautiful art, a Swedish pop song, two classic novels I finally sat down to read, and of course, a few links from around the web. A small collection to keep you company through the middle of winter.

Alright, here’s how the month went…

• I’ve been using the app Duolingo to start learning Swedish, and I’m finding it surprisingly engaging (and good at keeping me consistent!). I’ve also been listening to Swedish music—I linked a song above by a group I enjoy—and have a few Netflix series queued up to watch with subtitles. If you’ve ever taught yourself a new language, I’d love any tips you’re willing to share.

• We’re attending a winter wedding tomorrow! It will be a small, intimate group of guests celebrating a friend I’ve known since grade school—a very special invite that we were grateful to accept. I’ve always loved a small winter wedding. Scott and I chose to get married in November with just eight guests, and it still feels like the best decision.

• A Tree Grows In Brooklyn by Betty Smith (1943). What a treasure this was. Set in early 20th-century Brooklyn, the novel follows Francie Nolan as she grows up in a working-class immigrant family, navigating poverty, education, ambition, and the resilience of childhood. I love a hard-knocks coming-of-age story, and although this is fiction, the precision of everyday details makes it read almost like a memoir. If you enjoyed The Glass Castle (one of my favourite memoirs), you’ll likely enjoy this one too. Tender, observant, and deeply human—a heartbreaking and uplifting tale that captures universal experiences in an unforgettable way. In our current economic climate, it felt meaningful to sit with a story that reminds us how much people endure, and how deeply small kindnesses can register.

• Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë (1847). In anticipation of the upcoming film adaptation (with Margot Robbie!), I had no choice but to finally read this gothic classic. The novel follows the turbulent, generations-long entanglement between Heathcliff and the Earnshaw family, where love curdles into obsession and revenge. Set on the wild Yorkshire moors, it’s a story of pride and passion pushed to their most destructive edges. Not a comforting read, and filled with deeply unlikeable characters, but a fitting match for the bleak January weather. At moments I found it slow, but overall I was surprised by my enjoyment of it! *I only discovered afterwards that Brontë’s sister wrote Jane Eyre—a talented family indeed!

• Like many others, I really enjoyed the Norwegian film Sentimental Value. Beyond the stunning shots and beautiful performances, I loved how much trust the film places in the viewer. Nothing is over-explained, and the emotional tension builds slowly, leaving a discomfort that isn’t neatly resolved. It also sent me down a rabbit hole of Renate Reinsve’s style, past work, and her insiders guide to Oslo! She has that effortless cool so many Scandinavians seem to have mastered.

• Scott and I love word games. We usually play the NYT games every night, but I mentioned recently that I wanted a daily word game that didn’t involve staring at a screen (since I already do that all day at work). He surprised me with Bananagrams and Super Boggle earlier this month, and we’ve been playing a round after dinner each night. We added a few house rules for an extra challenge, and I have to say, I’m obsessed!

I love this quote and think about it each time I sit down to write you a monthly letter. Sharing the bits of beauty I’ve come across and romanticizing the mundane has always been a practice I hold dear—one that feels especially fitting as the curtains draw to a close on 2025. Writing this way helps me catalog what might otherwise slip by.

Lately, I’ve noticed more people writing about a cultural renaissance underway—one where art and beauty begin to reclaim what our hyper-digital world hacked out. A return to something more analog, texturized, and imperfect. Even the word beauty itself feels in need of rescue. Defined as “a quality present in a thing or person that gives intense pleasure or deep satisfaction to the mind,” it’s less a product and more a feeling—one that attunes us more closely to the people and places around us. Still, it’s been so flattened by marketing that I sometimes wonder if people assume I write a newsletter about makeup when I say I mostly talk about beauty.

December, of all months, seemed to further this conversation. Asking us: how can we prioritize what truly satisfies the mind? How can we recognize and invite more beauty into our daily lives? I have a few ideas for bringing more creativity to this space in 2026, and I’m looking forward to sharing with you.

• I didn’t publish a gift guide this year. It used to be one of my favourite posts to write, but I couldn’t bring myself to participate in the bombastic notifications of November this time around. Instead, I’ve included a small handful of items I personally asked to have wrapped under the tree—simple, thoughtful items I’m really looking forward to enjoying.

• Giovanni’s Room by James Baldwin. I went into this expecting something more emotionally sweeping, and while it didn’t quite land for me in the way Call Me By Your Name did, I still deeply admired the writing. Set between Paris and the south of France, the story follows an American man reckoning with the complexities of love, desire, and self-denial. Baldwin’s prose are reason enough to savour it: “There seemed to be more chatter – in that curiously measured and vehement language, which sometimes reminds me of stiffening egg white and sometimes of stringed instruments but always of the underside and aftermath of passion.”

• Heart the Lover by Lily King. We follow Jordan in her senior year of college, navigating a love triangle, friendship, and intellectual ambition with two friends from her 17th-Century lit class. Decades later, she is faced with a situation that forces her to confront the world she left behind. I enjoyed a lot about this one—the academic fervor and rapid-fire banter, the professor’s house that makes the story feel lived-in, and the messy but tender moments of forgiveness. However, it wasn’t a “fave”.

• Before I Forget by Tory Henwood Hoen. This new release via Book of the Month follows Cricket Campbell, a 26-year-old working in the wellness industry, who returns home to the Adirondacks to care for her father after his Alzheimer’s diagnosis. As she settles back into the family house at Catwood Pond, she discovers that her father has become an unlikely oracle—predicting the future as he loses his grip on the past. I’m saving this one for the holiday break (my last read of 2025!) and can’t wait to dive in.

• Small Things Like These by Claire Keegan. This beautifully written novella follows Bill Furlong, a coal merchant and family man in 1980s Ireland, as he enters his busiest working weeks leading up to Christmas. On a routine delivery, he comes face-to-face with the suffering of women in his town and must decide how to respond. Keegan captures moral courage and compassion in the smallest, most human gestures. An important look at how society can turn a blind eye, and how even small acts of kindness can have a lasting impact. Wonderful little holiday read!

I can’t believe it’s already time to put together the mood board that will carry us through to March 20, 2026! Winter has arrived—wrapping a big bow around 2025 and holding the door open as we step into the new year. I hope you enjoyed the solstice yesterday. It was dark and rainy at the lake—the sun rose at a casual 8AM and set at an early 4:18PM, clocking a shorter shift than my usual workday. We stayed cozy inside and tackled a few small projects.

This rendition is filled with snow-topped roofs, cinnamon-dusted marshmallows, deep reds, slipper pinks, oil paintings, bread bouquets, café curtains, and twelve girls standing in two straight lines.

• I finally got the sewing machine I’ve been talking about getting all year. A fantastic find on Marketplace (used is best!) that made the wait worth while. First up on my project list were curtains for the sliding glass doors in the kitchen…what do you think!?

• We hosted a holiday dinner and sleepover for a few friends last weekend, and it was such a blast. I loved following up our evening conversations over breakfast the next morning. One of our guests made me the beautiful wreath shown above. I decided to hang it inside instead of on the front door because I want to look at it constantly.

PS. I roasted pears and cranberries to serve as a festive pancake/waffle/yogurt topper for our holiday sleepover and it was delicious! I forgot to snap a photo, but here’s the super simple recipe:

Festive Orchard Topping
3 pears, cut into wedges
1 cup cranberries (I used from frozen)
drizzle of pure maple syrup
1-2 tbsp melted butter
cinnamon
pinch of salt

1. Toss pears and cranberries with maple syrup, butter, cinnamon, and salt.

2. Spread on a parchment-lined tray and roast at 375°F (190°C) for 20-25 minutes. Pears should be tender and edges caramelized.

3. Enjoy these winter delights (and impress your friends/family)!

outside our bedroom window at the start of the month—bursting with golden leaves and filling the room with a warm glow, like nature’s lamp. All the roads around the lake were lined with colour too, turning simple drives to town into scenes from of a Hallmark movie. Now, the branches are bare, the leaves have fallen, and that familiar early-winter hush blankets our home.

November was quiet, and I welcomed the wide-open pockets of time it offered. I tended to the house, rearranged art on the walls, and did a bit of holiday prep. We visited with friends, enjoying spontaneous dinners together around the table, and tried a few new recipes. I had an epic month in the world of literary fiction and accepted that a few of my goals for the year won’t be achieved. Even though I felt a bit tired and unproductive, there was something nice about letting the quieter moments be what they were and allowing that to be enough.

Here’s how it all went…

My artwork collection has grown a lot these past few months, and it’s something I’m starting to feel really proud of. As someone without a fancy budget, I’ve figured out several clever ways to make fine art accessible: always getting used (or super cheap) frames, purchasing mattes online in bulk, and getting gallery-grade glass custom cut. Bringing real, meaningful art into homes brings me so much joy… maybe it’s time for an updated post on affordable art collecting. What do you think?

• First up: Vogue Italia released their 2026 agendas featuring a young up-and-coming artist, and I fell hard for the silver shoes on the cover. They remind me of being a little girl, running down the halls of the hospital in my fancy “clicky” shoes to meet my baby brother—biggest smile on my Dad’s face. I emailed the artist, Ollie White, right away and somehow secured one of his limited edition prints, which he signed and shipped from the UK. I had to old-school wire transfer his bank overseas…the whole experience was as wholesale as they come. “Even the pair of shoes I painted doesn’t just represent footwear, but can have a more anthropomorphic look, almost as if they were two bodies lying next to each other in bed.”

• Secondly: the art subscription that I get each month (which is very affordable and the best investment ever) included a signed print of Colt Seager’s prairie paintings for October. His work isn’t available like this online, which makes it very special, and it looks so sophisticated on my gallery wall—ahh!

• They’re Going to Love You by Meg Howrey. The cover had me sold before I even read the synopsis for this one (an impressionist ballerina does it for me), and I’m so glad it did. It’s a story about art, ambition, and the complicated kind of love that threads through families. The book moves between the world of professional ballet, New York City during the AIDS crisis, and present-day Los Angeles. We follow Carlisle Martin as she navigates her relationship with each of her parents and makes choices that ultimately shape who she becomes. I loved the psychological nuances and, of course, the incorporation of the house on Bank Street. A sad but very enjoyable read—I recommend!

• The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood. Wow. I’m late to this party, but here we are—on the 40th anniversary of this unforgettable classic—and I cannot say enough about it. Set in a near-dystopian future, it follows life in what was once the United States and is now the Republic of Gilead. Through the voice of Offred, a woman forced into reproductive servitude, we witness the terrifying new social order she must navigate. It’s horrific and unexpected, but somehow also funny (in a dark satire kind of way) and frighteningly convincing. I’ve since been enjoying a few podcasts and binging the TV series… needless to say, a new favourite!

• Beautiful World, Where Are You by Sally Rooney. I had several other books on my list this month, but for some unknown reason I switched gears and went with this introspective, messy, and quintessentially ‘Rooney’ read! We follow four friends—Alice, Eileen, Felix, and Simon—as they navigate love, friendship, work, and the strange ache of trying to feel hopeful in a chaotic world. Several chapters unfold as long-form emails between Alice and Eileen, containing a uniquely millennial mix of dread and longing. Even though it’s set in warmer months, Rooney’s writing and the Irish landscape always feel like the dark and restorative months of winter to me. I enjoyed this thoughtful and melancholic read—her writing often feels like finishing up a little therapy session as I close the final page.

• I’ve got most of my holiday decorating up. Nothing too “christmasy”—just some fall flourishes that set a festive hosting mood. Like silk bows on the water filter, citrus garlands down the hallways, a few felted gnomes here and there, and my most recent craft: patchwork stars in the windows. Although the photo doesn’t capture them fully, the stars are hanging from thin gold wire and bring a charming wonder to the living room. This was a very simple project I made using construction paper and glue. I prefer all my holiday decor to lean more European—earthy, natural, and hygge. You won’t find a blow up plastic Santa here. Next on my list: dressing the tree!

• Scott and I celebrated our three year wedding anniversary this month. We got married on our three year anniversary—at 9:00am (the time we first met). We’ve now reached the point where we’ve been married longer than we dated, which feels very sweet. We wrote each other hand written letters, went on a hike, and had coffee and treats together. He also gifted me the Merit perfume I’ve been wanting to try… it’s so good!

A few recipes I’ve enjoyed lately:

• From Alison Roman’s new cookbook: buttered tomato soup with lentils and fennel.

• I’ve been doing Ina Garten’s perfect roast chicken with veg, then shredding the leftover chicken for future dishes: tacos, caesar wraps, ramen bowls, etc.

• This green bean casserole!

• We ate these crispy gingersnap cookies way too fast.

• I’m making this spiced pear and cranberry crumble when my father in law comes to visit this weekend.

• I would never have the patience for this, but if you’re a baker (or vegetarian) this turkey shaped bread looks amazing!

• One of my goals this year was to start an in-person book club. With relocating to the lake this summer, I’m finally feeling settled enough to commit to hosting a small group. The problem however, is finding the group. I tried a couple weeks on Bumble BFF, but alas, that was fruitless. Any ideas on how to connect with a few like-minded peeps in your local who you trust enough to invite into your home and talk about books?

• I’m working on setting up my reading goals for next year. This year was just a number (50 books—I’m only at 43 so I likely won’t make it), but next year I want to focus more on longer reads, re-reads, improving my vocabulary, translated books, a few non-fiction, and post-reading rabbit holes. rain showers and head colds, the middle bits were perfectly sweet. We spent two weeks in Palm Springs with both mine and Scott’s families—our first blended holiday—and it went off without a hitch! There were family olympics, morning hikes, touristy afternoons, and long evenings of cards around the kitchen table. I shot a roll of film, the boys screamed for joy at the TV as the Blue Jays made it the World Series, and we all noticed how rare it’s been to have this kind of uninterrupted time together. It was a special experience full of memories to savour and be grateful for.

Four books were read, many sights were seen, it was a hotter than usual October for me—but a great one. Here’s how it all went…

• Warm, familiar, inviting, and rich—Billie Martin’s latest album, Dog Eared, has been an ideal autumn listen for me. I linked one of her songs above, but I recommend a listen start to finish—mmm!

• After visiting Raven Hill Bagels in Idyllwild (highly recommend), I’ve had bagels on my mind. Currently loving a toasted variety with plain cream cheese, orchard pear jam, a dusting of ceylon cinnamon, and buckwheat grouts. If I’m feeling extra fancy, a drizzle of hazelnut butter.

• The Secret History by Donna Tartt. This dark academia classic is both an exploration on belonging and a murder mystery without the whodunnit. We follow a tight-knit group of eccentric classics students at a small New England college as their obsession with beauty and intellect unravels into betrayal, moral corruption, and madness. Tartt’s lush, descriptive writing pulls you in completely—at times blurring the line between her world and your own. Definitely one to put on your list if you haven’t read it already.

• I Am You by Victoria Redel. I love a good story, and this was one of the best I’ve read in a while. Set in 1600s Amsterdam, two women—a painter and her assistant—defy the norms of their time while finding their place in the male-dominated art world. Their uniquely complex relationship deepens and shifts throughout the novel. Without saying too much, it’s a reflection on love, creativity, and the courage of women who dare to see—and be seen—on their own terms. Highly recommend!

• Strange Houses by Uketsu. I picked this up at the cutest hole-in-the-wall bookstore while visiting Idyllwild. When we got home, the wifi was down and a rain storm had the trees surrounding our house oozing with fog. I knew it was the perfect time for this book, so I jumped in bed and read it in one sitting. A very odd and unsettling mystery thriller translated from Japanese. A writer and his architect friend investigate an eerie house for sale in Tokyo, full of weird layouts and hidden “dead spaces” between the walls. The more they discover, the more they realize they are in over their heads. A good read for spooky season.

• I’ve been on the hunt for coasters over the past few months. They’re one of those items that always feel too tacky, no matter which way you slice it. However, in Palm Springs, I stumbled upon the Mojave Flea Trading Post and found the cutest set of suede coasters. In a stunning Matisse Blue, they add texture and a little story to the living room. They give a subtle nod to the dessert without feeling out of place. Artsy, unique, and timeless—exactly what I was holding out for!

The pleasantly crisp September air encourages us to refine our rhythms and routines, devoting more space (and patience) to our practices. Hopefully the autumn equinox earlier this week acted as a refreshing palate cleanser—offering up some balance and clarity. I’m finally figuring out my flow in our new space and feeling more on solid ground. September was a good reset for me, anyone else feeling similar?

I’ve been tinkering away around the house these past few weeks—installing creative window coverings, spray-painting objects in espresso brown (my new favourite colour), and scoring some great vintage finds. The annual French Container Sale was last weekend (pictured above). You might remember me mentioning it last year: a local business owner spends the summer in France filling an entire shipping container with flea market treasures, then sets up shop on a farm here in town for one very busy afternoon in September. It’s one of my favourite events to attend, and this year I came home with the cutest beechwood and rattan stool.

There’s lots of fun stuff in today’s edit. Let’s dive on in…

• Olivia Dean’s new album, The Art of Loving, released today and it will likely be on repeat for the foreseeable future. I’ve also been listening to Comforting Sounds late in the evenings—wrapped up in a blanket on the balcony. The sky is so clear at our new place, some nights we can see the Milky Way. Without sounding too woo-woo, the five minute outro on this track feels like a spiritual experience. Give it a try.

• I’ve been a letter-in-the-mail-sender since my Nana taught me the importance of written correspondence as a child. Each month I head to the post office with someone’s birthday card, holiday greeting, or equivalent. Having something turn up in the mailbox for me in return is absolutely priceless, which is why I’ve signed up for my favourite subscription service ever: Pocket Art. Each month, a small piece of artwork signed by the artist is mailed to my door with a letter about the piece. Word on the street is Joy Kinna (the local genius behind this program) will be partnering with some really cool creatives in the coming months—I can’t wait to see what arrives next!

• A Certain Hunger by Chelsea G. Summers. This was a fun pre-halloween read. We follow Dorothy Daniels, a razor-sharp food critic with a murderous appetite for food, sex, and power. Over the course of a decade, as she moves between Manhattan and Italy, we discover she’s developed a taste for more than just food… namely, her boyfriends. The writing is lush and indulgent, equal parts satire and horror, with whole passages that read like gourmet restaurant reviews. It’s unhinged, not for everyone, and definitely falls in the category of weird-girl lit. I devoured it over a weekend and would recommend for the upcoming spooky season (not to the faint of heart).

• Exit Lane by Erika Veurink. This easy-to-enjoy romance novella is a modern riff on When Harry Met Sally and One Day. We follow Marin and Teddy over the span of a decade, beginning with a road trip after graduation and weaving through the many ways their paths cross. It’s a soft, character-driven story about timing, love, and the people who leave a lasting mark on our lives. Veurink’s writing is thoughtful, tender, and steamy—with a quiet pacing that allows you to slow down.

• The Idiot by Elif Batuman. I wanted to love this one—it’s a cult favourite in the “millennial classic” category—but honestly? It dragged… all 423 pages. We follow Selin, a Harvard freshman in the ’90s, as she fumbles through first love, philosophy classes, and endless email exchanges with an older mathematics student. I love a good coming-of-age story, but as I read through reviews afterwards, I realized I missed a lot of the intellectual insights and Russian literature references in Batuman’s writing. Oh well, I’ve moved on.

• Dinners haven’t been all that adventurous lately—I’ve mostly stuck to some staples: lemon chicken soup, fennel bolognese, and black bean zucchini fajitas. That’s left me with a little more room for fun breakfasts. These tiramisu overnight oats were a decadent delight (I used almond milk and grass-fed dairy yogurt). This maple pumpkin granola is perfectly festive and delicious with milk or greek yogurt… or just by the handful!

Another season, another mood board!

The Autumn 2025 board is a cozy one—full of rich espresso browns, dark academia vibes, quilted textures, and the simple pleasures of home.

I love the way it sets the tone in my office, like a seasonal compass pointing me towards what feels grounding. Just the inspiration I want around as the days get cooler and shorter.

• There’s a window in one of our hallways that needed a bit more privacy, but I still wanted to keep all the natural light—so a curtain wasn’t going to cut it. After some online browsing, I landed on these removable faux-fluted glass window coverings. They were easy to install and added a really beautiful texture to the space. I liked them so much I used the extra panel on my glass bookshelf doors and another small window in my office.

• Our couch also required side tables to hold snacks and goodies, but I wanted something versatile and inexpensive. I found a couple Ikea stools, sanded them down, and spray painted them in a deep luxurious espresso brown from the Behr Premium collection. They turned out so good! Since I had leftover paint, I gave a boring white mirror and an outdated picture frame the same DIY treatment. Very satisfying.

keep things chill, we made a last-minute decision to move—and it’s been anything but. The past two months have been full of organizing and selling items, weeknight cleaning, weekend painting, and so many more trips to Home Depot than anyone should ever attempt. But we did it! We packed up our city life and relocated to the small lake town where I grew up. All we need are a couple SUPs and a linen closet filled with beach towels and you can officially call us lake people1.

There’s something oddly comforting about driving the same roads I once spent hours on as a kid. A little full-circle moment if you will. Along with much reminiscing, I also celebrated another birthday, fell back in love2 with Folklore, Midnights, + Reputation, ate great food, and crossed a few books off my reading list. I still haven’t managed to pull the trigger on a sewing machine…but fall will be a better season for that.

Taking some time away from writing and posting has been much needed.3 I’m always grateful for a month when I can disappear—the only people who know what I’m up to are the ones who stop by or call. Makes me excited to connect and catch up with everyone as we cozy back into our regular routines next week. Alright, let’s jump in…

• The attic is where my new office setup is going—I feel like Harriet the spy in this room with its barrelled ceilings, built-in benches, and funky angled walls. It required a few coats of paint to freshen things up (and by that I mean cover the graffiti that was so kindly left behind). We went with the shade White Dove by Benjamin Moore and I absolutely love how it turned out. I’ll share more photos next month once I’m settled.

• We’re only a five-minute walk from the beach, which meant plenty of midnight dips after long, hot days. With the extra space this place provides us, we’re hoping to have lots of weekend guests next summer and become everyone’s favourite lake house. There’s still plenty to do, but now that some of the bigger projects are behind us, we can slowly tackle the rest throughout the colder months.

• The Hypocrite by Jo Hamya. The story unfolds in two worlds: a Sicilian summer from a decade ago, and present-day London, where a famous novelist sits in the audience of a play written by his daughter. He soon realizes the play is about their time in Sicily—and that he’s become the punchline. Hamya moves between timelines and perspectives so seamlessly, has a wonderful vocabulary, and successfully captures the tension of cross-generational conflict. I wouldn't put this on your 'beach reads' list, but I would definitely recommend as a unique and well-written piece that never quite leaves the grey-area.

• The Lost Daughter by Elena Ferrante. On a seaside holiday, Leda becomes fascinated by a young mother and daughter, stirring memories of her own troubled experience. After secretly stealing the child’s doll, she’s forced to confront the guilt and complicated feelings of abandoning her own daughters years before. Dark, unsettling, and strangely addictive—Ferrante packs a lot into this slim novella. Time to watch the film!

• Outline by Rachel Cusk. A female writer travels to Athens in the heat of summer to teach a writing course. She becomes the listening ear to several individuals who cross her path. This book wasn’t the summer read I had expected—I never quite understood where the story was going—probably because there wasn’t really a story at all. More like a variety of voices weaving together a complex tapestry of the human experience. Makes me curious about reading some of Cusk’s other works. But honestly, next summer I need to pick some lighter reads!

• On The Menu:
  - Sun gold tomato pasta with pistachio gremolata.
  - Delicious spring rolls with coconut peanut sauce!
  - Salsa verde with Que Pasa twist of lime chips.
  - Grilled salmon burgers + blackened salmon bowls.
  - Made this rhubarb almond cake again.

• I got to celebrate another birthday at the end of July! It was very sweet and low-key this year. A few close friends put on a little party/games night for me. Scott ordered Neapolitan-style pizzas and I made another rhubarb cake to share with everyone. I think I might be entering the stage where aging feels less scary and more of a great blessing. This quote was used as a crossword clue in one of our NYT games this week…fitting.

• I wrapped up the month by learning how to put scaffolding together. Just one of many afternoons spent driving to/from Home Depot—this time only to install a single light fixture in the living room. Everyone thought I was totally nuts for renting scaffolding and going to all the trouble. But to me, it was absolutely worth it! I found this beautiful paper fixture on FB marketplace and smile at it every time I enter the room. My husband is MVP for always helping with my projects—he truly is one of a kind.

from social media and committed to writing this newsletter! As I reflected on how that choice has both challenged and strengthened me, it got me thinking about hobbies and how we spend our time. Lately I’ve been longing for a tangible skill with longevity and depth—something practical enough to serve a purpose yet flexible enough to encourage artistry. Walks around the lake, good books, and curating beautiful corners of my life are all lovely rituals that I very much enjoy, but they don’t ask much of my hands.

The idea of sewing keeps showing up for me—little nudges every time I see something handmade. Of course the learning curve to take on a new skill feels daunting and somewhat overwhelming, but the potential of crafting a dress from scratch or tailoring a curtain’s hem feels too thrilling to ignore at this point.

So I’m curious to know your thoughts and experiences with your own hobbies. Do any of you have a craft you’ve carried since childhood? Or maybe you’ve started a brand new pastime recently? Tell me all about your hobbies and how they’ve influenced your life.

• I’ve been listening to HAIM’s new album I Quit —which landed just in time for summer and is packed with ‘moving on’ energy. Above are two more gems I’ve been loving this month. What are you enjoying while you drive lately? I’m always in need of good summer playlists for cruising to the grocery store.

• Haven’t been watching much lately. Jane Austen Wrecked My Life looks like a feel-good summer film that I’m excited to sit down for, and I will definitely give Lena Dunham’s new Netflix series a watch!

• Thirst For Salt by Madelaine Lucas. This one took me by surprise—a debut novel so quietly powerful, I can see myself returning to it next summer just to absorb the beautiful prose again. Set in an isolated Australian coastal town, it follows a young woman who, while vacationing with her mother, falls into a magnetic, slow-burning relationship with Jude, a man nearly two decades her senior. She slips into the rhythms of his solitary life and finds herself mixed into the longing, comfort, and tension of the relationship. It’s nostalgic, romantic, and achingly real—exactly the kind of book I was craving.

• Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid. Set against the backdrop of NASA’s 1980s space shuttle program, the story follows Joan Goodwin, an astronomy professor whose life takes an unexpected turn when she’s selected for astronaut training. Everything shifts—especially when she meets Vanessa Ford, an ambitious engineer. As Joan’s personal ambitions and her first experience of real love begin to collide under the weight of history, a high-stakes mission forces both women to confront what they’re willing to risk—for science, for love, and for themselves. I wish I could go back and read it all again for the first time—pack this one for your summer trips.

• Hot Milk by Deborah Levy. Sofia and her mother Rose travel to a sun-scorched town on the southern coast of Spain to consult a shamanic doctor, hoping for a cure to Rose’s unexplained illness. Having spent most of her life tethered to her mother’s condition, Sofia begins to loosen her grip, awakening to the town’s sultry atmosphere and the strange freedom it offers. Laced with dreamlike prose and fraught mother-daughter tension, I wanted to enjoy this more than I did. Although the imagery was captivating, the hazy elusive narrative left me questioning whether I had missed things along the way and weakened my connection to the characters. Good cast for the movie, but still not sold.

• Here are a few more books to embrace the heat this summer:

• New season = new mood board. Summer is for juicy fruits, vibrant petals, soft bellies, glossed lips, and lounging in the golden light. I enjoy putting these boards together so much. Changes the whole vibe of my office each time!

• I dusted off my film camera that hasn’t been used since…last September. It’s time for me to be less precious and take more candid shots, even if they’re imperfect. There are a few photos on the roll from last year that I can’t remember taking—and those kind of little surprises are one of the reasons that makes getting a roll of film developed so much fun.

• Have you visited my Tomato Art Gallery yet? It’s a good one. 🍅

• On The Menu:
  - I’ve officially perfected my spinach and tomato omelette. Feel free to place an order the next time you visit.
  - This creamy corn pasta with fresh market basil was a hit—especially with the addition of shredded chicken.
  - The melon ricotta snap pea salad is back in rotation for its brief seasonal window—it’s as crisp and refreshing as ever.
  - For the long weekend, I baked a rhubarb-almond cake (pictured below). Earthy and light, with bright bursts of tart rhubarb—I’ll definitely be making it again!
  - Of course, on the nights when I panic and can’t decide what to cook, I’m still falling back on trusty fajitas with rainbow peppers and zucchini. But in case you were wondering: yes, progress is being made in my journey to become the household chef.

• I did a little voice acting this month! My husband is doing audio work for a video game and when it came time to plug in a voice for the female character… well, it was either me or him. I got to scream like my bones were being crunched, solve puzzles, and pretend I was running from dinosaurs. It was harder than I expected, but so much fun—and honestly, the best part was just getting to see Scott in his element.

Artist in Residence: Joy Sullivan

Today we have something a little different for our artist in residence: a poet! Joy Sullivan is a best selling author and educator located in Portland, Oregon. Her work has appeared in publications like Goop and Oprah Daily—and her first book, Instructions For Traveling West, is a beautiful collection of poetry.

Sullivan explores “what it means to be a woman in the world making slow and chewy art.” She writes about emotions and experiences with a deep melancholic mood. Oh, and did I mention she loves tomatoes? Please enjoy one of her beautiful poems below.

should smell like dirt.” — Margaret Atwood. I can’t say that I end my days smelling very earthy, but I have been trying to spend my un-working hours outdoors. The backyard is once again my favourite spot of the house, and walks through the neighbourhood are a daily delight.

May is always a month packed with many emotions for me—and this time around was no different. I took things a little slower, gave myself space (hence this newsletter coming to you a week late), and connected with good friends. I also made myself a little jewelry set, baked a birthday cake, and read a few mediocre books (it happens). Thankfully I picked up a copy of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s latest, Atmosphere, today that should make June’s bookshelf a little more exciting.

My husband also started a new job this month, so I’ve taken on the role of head chef throughout the week. There have been a lot of repeat meals (chicken fajitas with market peppers and spinach), but I’m slowly getting into the groove and turning this culinary challenge into a creative pastime. I shared a few of my go-to recipes below, but feel free to share what you’ve been cooking midweek lately!

Alright, let’s get to it…

• I’ve been listening to the soundtrack of Bonjour Tristesse on repeat. Especially good when driving. After reading the book and waiting to watch the film adaptation this summer, it’s been the perfect way to get in the mood for a heat wave.

• After repeatedly burning the back of my neck, I finally got a wide brimmed bucket hat. This one is 100% cotton and makes me feel like Martha Stewart every time I wear it. I’m very much in love and would even consider picking up another colour (probably next year).

• Last year’s Boring Girl Summer article has resurfaced again. It seems many of you out there are still enjoying the thought of keeping the next few months somewhat unplanned. For a list of joys and luxuries found in the simplicity and quiet moments of long summer days, have a read.

May’s Bookshelf:

• Broken Country by Clare Leslie Hall. “A story of love, loss, and the choices that shape our lives.” As with most Reese’s Book Club picks, this plot came with a brilliant twist, some good love triangle tension, and engaging characters. So who killed the farmer? A romantic mystery set in the English countryside that had me invested, but also felt a tad slow. Although this wasn’t my favourite mystery, I would still recommend.

• Bonjour Tristesse by Françoise Sagan. This was a great read for May. A quick dip (only 100 pages) into the sun soaked days of summer. Translated from French and originally written in 1954. This classic is a bittersweet tale narrated by Cecile, a seventeen-year-old girl on the brink of womanhood, who meddles with her father's love life. I’m looking forward to watching the new film adaptation (major call me by your name vibes) and already listening to the soundtrack on repeat in the car.

• I’m Mostly Here to Enjoy Myself by Glynnis MacNicol. A memoir from 2021 about one woman’s journey through Paris while the city of lights is void of tourists yet still very alive with pleasure. I had a vision for what I thought wished this book was going to be like: the European version of ‘All Fours’ of course. I was very wrong. To be fair, I found MacNicol’s references to other literary works very interesting, the cover art totally sold me, and I had a few good laughs—but overall, too much talk about Covid restrictions (don’t need to relive that yet) and not the right fit.

• Anyone else gravitating more towards silver jewelry right now? I’ve been a golden-only gal forever, but lately I find myself reaching for the one pair of silver earrings I own each morning. I wanted a simple pearl bracelet and anklet to go with my silver earrings—so I decided to make myself a set! I had some mini fresh water pearls on a necklace that my Grandma passed down to me. I restrung them (using the original clasp) to make myself a dainty little combo. What do you think?

• My friend and I also made matching evil eye bracelets for a little pop of colour! I might attempt a necklace or keychain next—we’ll see. Here’s some inspo for what I’m envisioning…

• In other garment news, I connected with a local seamstress and we’ve been chatting about getting some poplin scandi shorts and a pair of duped Donni pants made next month. I also found a $2 pair of leather slides at my neighbours garage sale that I will be rocking all summer. The slow-closet refresh has been going really well, I’ll continue to keep you in the loop as this project unfurls! 🌀

• On The Menu: In addition to the chicken fajitas I mentioned earlier, I’ve also been making this easy thai green curry recipe on repeat. I’ll throw in the weekly market haul of vegetables and either shredded chicken breast or fried tofu for protein. This earl grey oatmeal was creamy and citrusy—a real treat for breakfast. Fresh pesto on pasta with prawns has been another staple that takes minimal effort. Then pesto with salmon the next night. But my finest kitchen creation this month was a devil’s food cake with blackberry jam (no I didn’t make the jam!) and cream cheese frosting. An early combined birthday celebration for both my husband and my Dad.

• On The Screen: We finished Your Friends & Neighbours and enjoyed it (would watch a second season). I just started The Better Sister (new suspense series with Jessica Biel—looks promising). Wes Anderson has a new movie coming out: The Phoenician Scheme. To be honest, I haven’t loved his last couple movies, but I will still give this one a go. And of course, The Materialists, a new movie starring Dakota Johnson as a professional matchmaker in NYC (directed by Celine Song)—can’t wait.

This quote by William Shakespeare rings true for me and feels like the fresh spring flowers blooming outside my window. Although it’s been a mixed bag of events this month, there is an overall feeling that all is well.

I’ve been working to deepen my relationship with finances and was lucky enough to attended a great workshop put on by women I admire. I also started a long-term project to slowly replace the garments in my closet with more natural, sustainable, and lasting pieces. Then I had a wisdom tooth removed that ended up with complications leading to a gruelling recovery. Although I’m still tracking my daily salt-water rinses, the worst of my tooth pain is in the rearview mirror, allowing me to sail into May with the windows down and the feel-good tunes up.

Here’s how it all went…

• I was invited to attend the Financial Expansion Workshop hosted by Rachel Saunders & Wealthkind earlier this month. Finances aren’t something I grew up talking about, or something I learned about in school (which makes no sense). It wasn’t until I got married that I had someone to openly talk about money with—and by that time I had already made lots of mistakes. The women at encourage adding finances to your wellness practice (just like doing yoga or eating healthy) and I really connected to this holistic method. They shared ways to reframe your relationship to money and a badass spreadsheet for practical monthly tracking! A great resource if you’re looking for one.

• Meals have been simple lately. This sesame-crusted salmon bowl was easy and delicious—same as this crispy fish with lemon butter spring veggies. We’ve been enjoying lots of fresh asparagus and spinach that’s been in season (even put it on our pizzas). The second half of the month was mostly smoothies, soups, and mashed potatoes for me. They say ice cream is good for tooth pain (wink, wink) so I picked up a tub from my local favourite: Parachute!

April’s Bookshelf:

• Cleopatra and Frankenstein by Coco Mellors. This one has been on my ‘tbr’ list forever and I’m glad I finally prioritized it. A brilliant debut novel about love, privilege, and an impulsive marriage that changed the lives of many. Cleo, a twenty-four-year-old British painter, meets Frank, a mid-forties man who’s achieved self-made success, and a funny and heartbreaking tale unfolds. I read some chapters physically and listened to the audiobook for others—which was lovely to hear Cleo’s accent and have a more personal connection to the characters.

• Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro. I wish I could say more about this sci-fi dystopian, but I’m going to be finishing it this weekend. Klara is an Artificial Intelligence friend with outstanding observational qualities. As she waits in the store for someone to purchase her as their own, the concept of ethics and what it means to love are explored. For those interested in our relationships to AI, I would recommend!

• Pond by Claire-Louise Bennett. This novella was a delicious little treat that I can’t quite pin down. Told through an un-named narrator who seems to struggle with anxiety (and likely OCD)—she takes us through moments in time as her train of thought runs wild and free. It was very peculiar and beautifully written. An honest and poetic look at life.

• Slow Days, Fast Company by Eve Babitz. This collection of short stories reads as a biographical time capsule of Babitz’s life in Los Angeles during the 1960s. As a Hollywood-born party girl, she spent her days running around with the almost-famous, and to be frank, I wasn’t convinced the book was for me. However, her unique voice, dry humour, and vivid atmospheric descriptions surprised me on several occasions. This indulgent artist knows her way around a beautiful sentence—and the magical places of L.A.’s past.

A slow closet refresh.

• I’ve been attempting a slow transition to more natural fabrics in my closet. Less fast fashion, polyester, and nylon. More cottons, linens, and sustainably sourced items. This isn’t something I can afford overnight, but selling items I no longer align with and sourcing new items from places like Marketplace and local consignment stores is making it doable (and fun!). I’ve also started following girls who sew on socials and I’m becoming slightly obsessed with the idea of making some of my own items (or working with a local seamstress, let’s be real). For anyone interested, I’ll be sharing more as I continue this long-term project throughout the year.

• Some local influencers put on a ‘Spring Closet’ sale earlier this month so my friend and I made an afternoon date out of it. I’m new at shopping for used clothes and didn’t have high expectations (especially looking for natural fabrics)—but this experience was absolutely kismet.✨ For $80 I picked up this cotton-blend trench coat, the scalloped long sleeve from Donni that’s been on my wishlist for ages, an Away travel bag that matches my luggage, and wait for it….a pair of Rachel Comey white denim that fit me like a gosh darn glove! Say what you will, I call that manifestation.

• A month of mini-series: as you might imagine, I had plenty of time for watching TV while I was off on tooth-removal leave. My favourites have been: The Perfect Couple (Netflix, great cast, murder mystery in a stunning holiday home in Nantucket), Black Doves (Netflix, secret spy agents, British), The White Lotus (HBO, season three—you know it, you love it), and Your Friends & Neighbors (Apple TV, burglary, drama).

• The art of selecting a background image for one’s iPhone is a tricky and delicate endeavour. I like to treat my digital spaces like my physical spaces—which means hanging a piece of artwork on my iPhone’s wall that makes me feel something. Selecting a lock screen photo is simple—but finding an image that sits right behind a collection of apps is more complex. This gorgeous underwater flower image (shown below) by Johann Besse caught my eye. The soft colours, blurriness, and water ripples welcome me with spring abundance as I swipe up to unlock.

The Monthly Edits are a casual curation of my consumptions from the past few weeks including: books I read, delicious eats, fun finds, and personal meanderings. Buon appetito!

I pulled the rebounder out of the storage closet, gave it a quick wipe down, and set it up in my office. The springs are squeaky and slightly rusted, but I can’t really notice if I turn the music up loud enough. Bouncing in place like a child always seems to put a smile on my face—and is surprisingly tiring. It’s the perfect remedy for shaking off a work day or tackling a mental slump. Apparently it’s also good for lymph flow—which is a bonus for those of us who dislike dry brushing.

Besides the trampoline, March was filled with some lovely social time, walks after dinner (now that the sun is still out), waiting in line for spinach at the farmers market while getting drenched in rain, and a few trips to the dentist. There was good food and good entertainment (all linked below)—a solid start to spring. Let’s start things off with a song I’m loving right now and hopefully you’ll enjoy the rest…

• Rhubarb has been on my radar lately. I cooked a rhubarb jam years back but really haven’t worked with this beautiful vegetable enough (yes, technically it is a vegetable within the buckwheat family!). I’ll be scouring the internet for the best recipes but if you have one you love, feel free to send it my way.

• This thread on women being whimsical is the most joyous thing I’ve read in a while. Someone asked “what cute habits do other women like to practice?” and the answers include things like: “holding regular office hours at my local coffee shop so friends and family can stop by and chat with me”, “saying ‘my lady’ whenever I walk by a mirror”, “telling my dishes it’s bath time”, “drinking water at night out of a small wooden bowl to feel like I’m being nursed back to health” and “if I want to have negative thoughts about myself, they must have a cockney accent”.

March’s Bookshelf:

• First Lie Wins by Ashley Elston. I started the month with this fast paced mystery thriller and absolutely loved it. After so many literary fiction reads, this was a fun escape—it felt like watching a really good mini-series (which I believe is currently in production). Rather than telling you the story of Evie Porter, I’m going to suggest you go into this blind and let the twisty plot sneak up on you! Honestly, don’t even read the jacket.

• Open Throat by Henry Hoke. The narrator of this sharp and original novella is a queer mountain lion who lives under the Hollywood sign—lonely and fascinated by humanity’s foibles (based on a real mountain lion who lived in Griffith Park). I enjoyed the commentary on what it means to be a sentient being in today’s world—the story actually reminded me of the novel Beautyland (which I enjoyed more and would recommend).

• Deep Cuts by Holly Brickley. Music lovers, this one is for you. A nostalgic read set in the early 2000s about two people who’s love for consuming and creating music finds them stuck between romance and success. I’ll be finishing it up this weekend but have enjoyed how Brickley writes about the challenges of being true to ourselves, finding out what makes us happy, and being heard. Not to mention her knowledge of music (and the fact that she is from British Columbia!).

• All’s Well by Mona Awad. I was very excited for my second Awad novel after loving ‘Bunny’ so much last year. Side note, did you hear: Bunny #2 is coming out at the end of September? I cannot wait! Anyway, All’s Well follows Miranda Fitch as she directs a college performance of Shakespeare’s All’s Well That Ends Well while managing chronic pain and slowly blurring the line between a historical play and her own reality. It’s well written and had great Shakespeare references, but the ending fell flat for me. Which is very sad because the build up was great and I wanted to love it so much more.

The Spring Mood Board

• I’ve been loving this quote lately: “If it makes you happy, it’s not a waste of time.” Over the past year I’ve really focused on spending my time in ways that feel enriching. For so long I felt guilty about doing anything that wasn’t “productive”. I’m not exactly sure what shifted, but I feel like I finally have a better relationship to work and output. Scott said he’s noticed that I’ve been softer and more at peace lately. I feel proud of that comment and my new ability to enjoy the things that make me happy—like cutting out photos to make a giant mood board!

• This one is the embodiment of spring because… we made it! There is light in the sky after work (hallelujah) and the cherry blossoms are turning the whole town pink. It felt so good to unpin snow covered images and cover my 5ft x 3ft canvas with vibrant photos. I probably say this every season but I really do think this is my favourite one yet.

• On screen this month: We went to see Mickey 17 at the theatres. I thought the story was really creative (based on the book Mickey7) and the cast was stellar. I didn’t love the political references and thought the film could have been stronger without—but c'est la vie. Still really enjoyed it! We also watched Running Point and the season finale of Severance (finally some questions were answered!). I’m looking forward to a few movies coming out in April… The Assessment and The Amateur.

• The best meal I cooked this month was Alison Roman’s slow roasted oregano chicken with buttered tomatoes (image below). Honestly, this woman never disappoints. I followed the recipe but added the zest from one lemon to the bird, as well as chopped carrots and fennel to the vegetables for extra volume. We ate it on freshly baked bread like a… chicken bruschetta? It was heaven (and so were the leftovers).

and sweet. The weekdays flew by, so I attempted to fill the weekends with activities to avoid the last slump of winter. A trip to the butterfly gardens offered glorious 25 degree (78°F) weather and some pretty epic wildlife. I felt like Cinderella with all the magical little beauties fluttering around me—a great way to avoid a cold rainy Saturday and spend the afternoon in the tropics!

As far as cooking went, I’ve been loving this cannellini bean hummus (with red pepper flakes) on crackers for the perfect midday snack. I made Stanley Tucci’s eggplant parmigiana for our V-day dinner—which was heavenly on fresh garlic bread. This crab and fennel pasta was light, fresh, and super nutrient dense! I picked up local crab meat from the fish market and everything. You’ll also find a super simple lemon olive oil cake recipe below that’s sure to impress any guest.

Let’s start with a little pillow talk…

• Scott and I have been sleeping with separate duvets for a few years now. I was self-conscious to tell people about this at first, but then I found out it’s a well-known practice called the Scandinavian Sleep Method. I now feel chic and trendy instead of weird about the situation (lol). My sleep quality is leaps and bounds better than it was before. As a sensitive and cold sleeper—who married a deep and hot sleeper—having our own blankets really is the most romantic thing we can do for each other! Anyone else using this method?

• I’ve always used an analog alarm clock in my bedroom, but I recently updated my 0.99¢ IKEA find (with zero features) to the super snazzy Braun BC03 alarm! I’m so in love with it—for anyone else with a no phone policy in the bedroom, I highly recommend this absolute classic.

I hope all future Valentine bouquets are made with radicchio.

February’s Bookshelf:

• Romantic Comedy by Curtis Sittenfeld. Such a fun read. Sally Milz is a successful sketch writer for a late-night live comedy show that airs every Saturday (basically SNL). When Noah Brewster, a pop music sensation, signs on to both host and star as the musical guest of the week, they make a lasting impression on each other. As someone who doesn’t typically read romance, I flew through this and loved getting a backstage look at SNL!

• What I Ate in One Year by Stanley Tucci. “Sharing food is one of the purest human acts.” This man has a relationship with food—that goes without saying—so I read this as another February romance read. The audio version is superb, like hanging out with Tucci in his living room and listening to him talk shop about pasta sauces. The book is written in a diary format from January to December and includes what he eats throughout the day—as well as several other very cool things he gets to experience for work/pleasure/celebrity life.

• The Pisces by Melissa Broder. I picked this up after reading Broder’s other novel Milk Fed, which I absolutely adored. Sadly, this romance involving a woman who has hit rock bottom and a merman she meets in Venice Beach wasn’t the siren song I was envisioning. It’s clever and somewhat morbidly funny—definitely in the atypical romance genre.

• The Safekeep by Yael Van Der Wouden. Such a treasure. This tender and intense tale of desire, suspicion, and obsession between two women is set in the Dutch countryside during the summer of 1961. I love it when writers include a house as a character in their stories—the attachment and love we feel towards our space—and The Safekeep was an exceptional example of this. Highly recommend.

Lemon, Olive Oil, & Yogurt Bundt Cakes

• Scott surprised me with the bundtlette pan from my wishlist for Valentine’s day, so I immediately made lemon olive oil cakes. I used this recipe from Love and Lemons—it’s surprisingly simple and quick to whip together. Great as a dessert or a sweet breakfast cake. She made it in a loaf pan, but I prefer the shape of little bundt tins or a 6” round tea cake. Feels more fun and celebratory!

• On the second round, we tried gluten-free flour with the recipe and it worked just as well. I think I’ll try a chocolate version next. If you have any great bundt recipes, feel free to send them my way. I’m foresee many mini cakes in my near future.

• Apparently saying the mantra ‘these are the good days’ at least once everyday has the power to raise your baseline happiness. I’ve been trying it out by keeping a little note on my desk and the back of my bookmark. I’ll probably have to go about this longer than a month before I can officially report any changes—but I’m committed to the challenge!

• This artsy townhouse in London is a total dream (pictured below). I love how the kitchen is full of framed works that don’t feel too precious—allowing for the art to rotate easily as seasons change. The Edwardian architecture features spacious rooms, large windows, and high ceilings. If you fancy a colourful and curated home, have a stroll through the article.

Is it too late to say Happy New Year? I hope January has brought much delight and restoration to each of you. After taking a break from posting—and prioritizing things like baking cookies and catching the sunset—I’m very happy to be back and sharing all the goods from the past few weeks!

If you’ve been around here a while, you might remember that I like to choose a word for the year. Last year was ease—playing with the concept that less force can offer better results. For this next trip around the sun, I’ve chosen the word golden. Channelling a year of small joyous victories, finding value in my work, savouring life’s riches, and defining what my own version of success looks like. A year of trusting that the odds are in my favour, the truth is inside, and these are the good days!

In case you’re looking to channel a golden era for yourself, here are a few songs to spark that flame…

• Neumann has been following patches of sunlight as they move around the house to meet his vitamin D quota. A cat after my own heart.

• I’ve noticed several people craving more rest lately—myself included. Winter has traditionally been a time for quiet restoration, but our lives don’t always support that nowadays. We obviously can’t turn ourselves off for the season due to jobs, households, and responsibilities—but I’d still like to think of taking some sort of modern hibernation that allows us to collectively exhale and ground. Maybe a month off social media? An earlier bedtime? Cosier social events? What do you think—what would modern hibernation look like to you?

• On that note… this yoga for nourishment video has been the perfect 25 minute reset lately. As someone who works from home, I’ve been using this as my “commute” after work to leave the office behind and enter my evening feeling more clear and open.

January’s Bookshelf:

• Pure Colour by Sheila Heti. A very unique reading experience where the words almost seemed to welcome me into a light state of hypnosis. This philosophical wonder has been referred to as the “contemporary bible, an atlas of feeling, and an absurdly funny guide to the great (and terrible) things about being alive.” For anyone like me, who has lost a parent, I recommend wholeheartedly. Take the words with a grain of salt, and let the deeper meanings rise to the surface.

• Conversations With Friends by Sally Rooney. This was a re-read for me. I wanted another go with Rooney after finishing the much anticipated Intermezzo and I’m glad I did. I really enjoy the way she realistically portrays the pains and flaws of human nature. “A sharply intelligent novel about two college students and the strange, unexpected connection they forge with a married couple.” Oh to be young…

• Stoner by John Williams. I’m so grateful to have started the year with this poignant gem. A classic American tale of a man who comes from a dirt-poor Missouri family and falls in love with English literature. I was worried this might be too sad or heavy for me, but even through his succession of disappointments, our main character continues to do his best. Williams so gracefully captures the beauty of an ordinary life—the intense averageness our modern world is so afraid of. Brilliant!

• Anita De Monte Laughs Last by Xochitl Gonzalez. Novels with settings in the art world always pique my interest, so this one was inevitable. “A mesmerizing story about a first-generation Ivy League student who uncovers the genius work of a female artist decades after her suspicious death.” It was an enjoyable enough read about justice, legacy, and power—but not one that will make the top of my charts.

Extra Lemony + Herby Chicken Noodle Soup

• Although we’ve been getting some gorgeous sunshine, the temperature outside is still hovering just above zero. January called for homemade comfort foods in the form of soup and bread, so I’ve made a couple batches of my favourite lemon chicken noodle. This dish is full of herbs, bright with citrus, and offers the feel-good nourishment of a classic chicken noodle. It’s been a go-to each winter and still leaves me excited for another bowl.

  I’ve included the recipe for you below in a PDF that you can download or print. I’ve also been using these single serving silicone trays for freezing my leftover soup for work lunches and highly recommend!

• After looking for the perfect inexpensive tealight holders for longer than I care to admit—I finally found them. The other weekend, our friends hosted a classy little games night and had tealights in these simple fluted glass holders. Turns out they are $0.49 from IKEA—so I bought ten of them and couldn’t be happier with the purchase.

• I really enjoyed Silo season 2 this month—the finale was a jaw dropper. We also went to see A Complete Unknown and thought it was really well done. I’ll probably hop on the Severance train next—maybe check out Baby Girl and The Brutalist—but open to recommendations. Are you watching anything good right now?

• Aliza & Aja invited me to contribute to their article: 27 Little Things That Make Our Lives Better. It’s a charming list of feel-good items, simple rituals, and acts of kindness. I shared my MVP of winter—pop on over for a fun read!
