There are so many ideas running through the trees of my mind these days. The weeks have been a little quieter socially, but I’ve been working hard and following the patterns that keep tugging at me. My dreams are getting bigger, and I think I’m starting to trust myself enough to actually follow them.
Or maybe that’s just September. A month that always seems to swirl little bits of magic dust throughout the air. Either way, I love the return to routines and that familiar urge to get down to business.
Let’s start this collection with a little Agnes Obel—I always think of her September Song when the leaves start to rust. She also has a new album coming out next week that will likely be perfect for cosy season.
My routine has been really simple lately: lunch hour walks, lots of work, and a little pilates here and there. I’ve been roasting up seasonal veg, finishing off a few small projects that got away from me this summer, and apparently breaking my extremely strict rule of no eating in the car.
Keeping the days small while my mind has been so busy has felt necessary.
I finally got around to hand-dyeing my canvas beach hat. Ever since my chore jacket project went so well, I knew my Lack of Color Holiday Bucket Hat was next on the list. The shape and structure of this hat are perfection, but the warm yellow canvas was washing me out pretty badly. So I used the leftover garment dyes from my jacket (denim blue + pearl grey) and created something totally custom. My inspo vibes for the hat were: faded sailcloth, weathered denim, soft stone—a very cool toned, washed-out coastal grey that feels really lived-in and slightly Danish. Yes, I was that specific. I think we can officially call this a success! What do you think—two for two?

Scaffolding by Lauren Elkin (2025).
Set in the same Paris apartment fifty years apart, we follow two women as they navigate marriage, motherhood, desire, and psychoanalysis. Their lives seem to echo one another across time. I loved the premise and really enjoyed the first of three sections, but eventually it started to lose me. There was clearly a lot happening beneath the surface—French feminist history and psychoanalytic theory—that I’m not well versed enough in to fully appreciate. I also could have done without quite so much infidelity masquerading around as an intellectual exploration of desire. But bless the Parisians, just simply a bit of a miss for me.They by Helle Helle (2026)—translated from Danish by Martin Aitken.
Sometimes I enjoy torturing myself with a book, and this happened to be one of them. Allow me to share the very first paragraph with you for context: “Later she goes over the fields with a cauliflower. Goodbye to those Kung Fu slippers. All roads lead to roads. She carries on into Vestergade, past the front-gardenless houses. A man waves from his breakfast. But when you come from around here, houses aren’t front-gardenless.”The story follows an unnamed teenage girl and her mother, who live an uneventful life on a small island in the south of Denmark. While the daughter makes her way through high school and the first steps of adulthood, her mother’s illness and the possibility of loss cast a shadow over their daily rituals. As someone who experienced this at a much younger age, I was taken in.
Helle’s writing is incredibly sparse, leaving much of the story to happen between the lines. It took me a while to find the rhythm, but once I did, I became fascinated by how these seemingly ordinary details slowly built into something more intimate. The final sentence leads directly back into the first, turning the whole novel into a loop. I finished feeling like a second read would reveal so much more. A fascinating study in writing.
When life gives you plums…
Scott’s coworker gave us a few bags of fresh orchard plums last week. The first thing we made with them was an almond plum coffee cake that was absurdly good. Then came a little plum crumble, which disappeared rather quickly. We have enough left for one more recipe—if you have a favourite way to use plums, send it my way.

What’s the strangest sentence you’ve read in a book lately?
I made a lot of noise plum and almond sour cream cake last September! I don’t have a specific recipe — just kind of cobbled together fusing a few different recipes — but it was so, so, so yummy (especially with flaked almonds on top. Also, slowly roasted plums served with labne, almond butter, cinnamon sprinkle and a honey drizzle is the yummiest post-dinner treat with a cup of tea xx
